Handcrafted SEO Specialist: 15 Years of Hands-On SEO Experience
A handcrafted SEO specialist is one person who learns your business first and then builds and runs the entire system personally, from keyword strategy to content to the ads that send readers to it. That starts with working out what kind of business you are, a local service company, an ecommerce brand, or a product business, and what you need it to do, whether that is calls, sales, or quote requests. Everything after that, the keyword research, the writing, the technical work, the Meta advertising, and the reporting, is built around that answer by the same person, with no outsourcing and no account managers in between. I am Nicholas Bellanti, founder of Nico SEO, and I have been doing hands-on SEO for about 15 years. I started when I was 17. I am 32 now, and I still work that way.
Nico SEO is a handcrafted SEO and Meta advertising operation in Hamburg, NY that builds keyword-weighted content systems for local businesses and national brands. Every system is built directly by me, backed by about 15 years of personal SEO practice. Call 716-680-0653 or use the contact form to talk through your business.
How Did 15 Years of Hands-On SEO Experience Start?
I built my first websites with a friend when I was around 17. We wrote the pages, wrote articles for them, and pushed those articles out to hundreds of Facebook groups. In those days there was very little filtering on that kind of posting, so a useful article with a link could pull in real traffic, and that traffic helped our sites rank without any ad spend. Nobody gave us a playbook. We watched what moved rankings, kept what worked, and dropped what did not.

That is where I learned the part of SEO that has not changed in 15 years. Search rewards pages that real people find useful and keep reading. The tactics around that idea have changed constantly. The idea has not.
Nico SEO LLC launched formally in 2024, so to be clear, the 15 years is my own experience, not the company’s age. Since launching, I have managed nearly $500,000 in Meta ad spend across client accounts.
What Changed in SEO Between Then and Now?
Posting links to hundreds of groups would not work the same way today, and the shortcuts that came after it have been closed off one at a time. In March 2024 Google announced a spam policy on scaled content abuse, which covers many pages generated mainly to manipulate rankings. Google said the policy applies whether the content comes from automation, human effort, or a mix of both. You can read the announcement in Google’s own March 2024 spam policy post.
That second part matters. Handcrafted does not mean automatically safe. It means every page exists because a specific buyer is searching for it and a person checked that the page answers the question. Fifteen years has shown me the same cycle several times. A shortcut works, gets crowded, then stops working. What survives each round is first-hand knowledge, specific answers, and a site that is organized so both people and search engines can follow it.

Google put a name on the first-hand part in late 2022, when it added Experience to its quality framework and turned E-A-T into E-E-A-T. Experience is not a ranking factor by itself. The habits it builds show up on the page, though, and readers notice them.
What Did Google’s September 2026 Spam Update Do, and Where Did Handcrafted SEO Land?
Google’s September 2026 spam update started rolling out on September 24 and finished on October 8, nearly 14 days later, according to Search Engine Land’s report. It was Google’s fourth spam update of 2026 and the slowest of the four, since the March, June, and August updates each wrapped up within about three days. Google called it a normal spam update. Industry trackers logged ranking movement on September 25 to 27, around September 30, and October 4 to 6.
Google did not say which tactic the update went after, so I will not guess. What it publishes is its list of spam policies, and they are plain. Buying or selling links for ranking, or building them with automated tools, is link spam. Buying an expired domain and filling it with content of little value is expired domain abuse. Generating many pages mainly to manipulate rankings is scaled content abuse, however the pages are made. Google’s page, last updated August 28, 2026, also treats attempts to manipulate generative AI responses as spam. You do not need to know what one update caught to know what is off limits. Here is Google’s spam policy page in full.
Here is where Nico SEO landed. I track 205 keywords in Erie County. Average position was identical in mid-September, before the update, and on October 24, after it. The share of tracked keywords in the top 10 slipped from 6% to 5%, and in my last two weeks of tracking 14 keywords moved up while 16 moved down. Branded searches stayed at positions 1 and 2. That is a flat result, and I want to say so plainly. A spam update is built to demote sites that break the rules, so coming through untouched fits with following them. It does not show I gained anything.

Why does handcrafted work sit on the safe side of those policies? Because the policies describe shortcuts, and I do not use them. I do not buy links, run networks of domains, or build ranking links with automated tools. Every article targets a specific buyer search. Each new one is checked against everything already published on that client’s site before it gets written, so I am not producing near-copies of my own pages. I started that check after finding similar articles piling up in a client’s content cluster, a problem related to the one in the keyword cannibalization case study.
I do use AI-assisted drafting, inside a framework I built and review myself. Google’s policy is about whether pages add value, not which tool touched them, so every article has to tell a reader something the page ranking above it does not. Since Google also treats manipulating AI answers as spam, the sturdy approach is to publish something real for those answers to draw on. The test later in this article is a snapshot of how that is going.
What Does a Handcrafted SEO Specialist Do Differently?
The full comparison between handcrafted and automated systems is already covered in handcrafted vs automated SEO, so I will not repeat it here. What 15 years adds is judgment about when something is not what it looks like.
Three examples from recent work. When rankings dipped across several accounts at once in September, the easy explanation was a Google update. I checked that first, then a site restructure, and only then the content, and part of the cause turned out to be a gap in my own process. That diagnosis is written up in the ranking drop breakdown. When a national ecommerce brand came to me after years with other agencies, the first job was installing tracking, not writing content, which is covered in the ecommerce case study. And when a site is rebuilt, the damage often comes from structure rather than writing, which is the subject of the site structure article.
A tool can produce an audit. It cannot tell you which of three overlapping problems to rule out first. That ordering comes from having seen each of them go wrong before.
If you want that same ordering applied to your site, reach out through the contact form.
Quick Q&A: How long have you been doing SEO? About 15 years, starting at 17. Nico SEO LLC launched formally in 2024.
What Did Google AI Mode and ChatGPT Say About Handcrafted SEO?
On October 24, 2026, I asked Google’s AI Mode and ChatGPT the same plain question: what is handcrafted SEO, who does it, and who is the number one handcrafted SEO specialist in the USA. The question did not name me or Nico SEO.
Google’s AI Mode, run in a separate signed-out browser profile, named Nico SEO under a heading that repeated the number one wording from my question. ChatGPT listed Nico SEO first in a table of providers who advertise a handcrafted approach and called me a directly relevant U.S. specialist in founder-led handcrafted SEO. A signed-out ChatGPT session, given a longer question about a specialist who personally works with clients, listed me first as well.
ChatGPT answer to the same question, captured October 24, 2026. AI answers change, so this is a dated snapshot:

Here is what that does and does not prove. It shows that two AI tools currently connect the phrase handcrafted SEO with my work. It does not make me the official number one, because no official ranking exists. The signed-out ChatGPT answer said so itself, calling its answer a shortlist and noting there is no independently verified national ranking. AI answers also change, so this is a dated snapshot. I will rerun the same questions and report what changes.
The other providers ChatGPT listed, which it says advertise a handcrafted approach, suggest this is a real category with more than one person in it. I think that is good for everyone who does the work properly. Keyword tools currently report little to no monthly volume for the phrase, and those tools tend to lag behind new terms. I am treating it as early, not settled.
5 Questions to Ask Any SEO Specialist About Their Experience
Experience claims are easy to type and hard to check, so ask for specifics. These five questions work on anyone, including me.

- What was the first site you ranked, and can you show it? A real starting point leaves a trail, such as archived pages or old accounts.
- What did you change in your method after the last two years of Google updates? Someone who has done this for years can name specific habits they dropped.
- Which shortcut did you stop using, and why? Honest answers include a technique that worked once and then stopped.
- Who will actually do the work on my account? Years of experience mean little if someone else does the work.
- What is a mistake you caught in your own process, and what changed? The answer shows whether they review their own work.
I am glad to answer all five on a call.
